Introducing the quantum Hall effect

I will not give you a historical review of the quantum Hall effect, because this has already been done by numerous authors. We will not even do a complete review of the quantum Hall effect. In this chapter we will only highlight the key features of the quantum Hall effect and introduce some concepts needed in the rest of the thesis. For a really thorough review I refer you to some books that exist on the subject [12,23].
